The Defrag & Optimize option in Auslogics Disk Defrag does many things: analyzes the disk, defragments the files, folders, and free space, moves system files to the front of the disk, and defragments the MFTTemporary system folders are cleared before running a defrag with Auslogics Disk Defrag so junk files aren't defragmented, which could slow it down. A Quick Defrag can be launched to make Auslogics Disk Defrag skip an analysis and go straight to a defrag. Defrags can run during startup before Windows boots up. Idle defrags can run when the computer isn't in use, which means you don't have to worry about defragmenting on a regular basis. Auslogics Disk Defrag Pros & Cons. There's plenty to like about Auslogics Disk Defrag: Pros: Completely free for personal use and in commercial settings. Really quick install. Can exclude files and folders from a defrag. Run scheduled defrags. Supports boot- time defragging. Set defrag priority. Supports defragmenting more than one drive simultaneously. Run a defrag when the system goes idle. Search through every fragmented file. Check and correct errors on a drive. Defragment the master file table (MFT)Can be downloaded as a portable version without installation. Cons: Can't move custom files to the end of the disk*No option to run a defrag on just the free space. Tries to install another Auslogics program during setup*Note: Programs like Defraggler can move any fragmented file (like old files) to the end of the disk to make room for common files to reside at the front end for quicker access. Advanced Defrag Options. There are two settings I'd like to cover to make sure you're getting the most out of Auslogics Disk Defrag. Move System Files. Files can be located at the beginning of a disk, at the end, or somewhere between the two. The speed at which you can open and modify files depends on their location on the drive. If a particular file is at the beginning, opening and writing to that file is quicker versus if it were on the further end of the drive. Auslogics Disk Defrag can move system files to the front of the disk so you can read and write to them quicker, essentially giving them higher priority than other file types. This speeds up the overall performance of the computer. However, as I noted above, this process is only applied to certain files and not custom ones you choose yourself. Several different system files are moved, such as the following: the SAM file, every event viewer log file, and DLL, EXE, SYS, and OCX files in the %WINDIR%\System. Access this option in the settings under the Algorithms tab. The option you should enable is called Move system files to the beginning of the disk, which is not selected by default. While this is useful, again, it's unfortunate you can't move your own files to give programs or other common extensions priority over the rest of the files on your hard drive. Note: Enabling this option in Auslogics Disk Defrag will make a defrag slower than usual. Also, it's only applied when you run the Optimization function, not just a regular defragment. Delete Temporary Files. If you're looking to make Auslogics Disk Defrag run a defrag as quick as possible, you should let the program remove temporary files before starting a defrag. Under the settings, in the Disk cleanup tab, make sure the option Delete temporary files before defragmenting is selected. This option will remove the temporary files in the Local Settings/Temp, App. Data/Temp, and Windows/Temp folders. Clearing these files out means Auslogics Disk Defrag doesn't see them, which means it doesn't defragment them. This is an easy way to speed up Auslogics Disk Defrag. My Thoughts on Auslogics Disk Defrag. Given the many features and pros listed above, Auslogics Disk Defrag is obviously one of the better defrag programs out there right now. The only thing I can think of that would push Auslogics Disk Defrag over the edge to make it the best free defrag program would be one thing; the ability to move any file you want to the front of the disk, not just system files. While this feature isn't supported, I am glad it moves common system files to a quicker part of the disk. It may just be a placebo effect, but my computer actually seems quicker after running the full optimization and defrag. Actually, I was reportedly left with a zero fragmentation level, which is of course what we're after. The scheduler is really easy to use and even lets you run a schedule against every attached drive and not just one. When scheduling an idle scan, it only runs every 1. I also like that you can download a portable version of Auslogics Disk Defrag for use from external media like a flash drive. The portable download option is easy to miss - it's halfway down the download page and to the right. Note: Before Disk Defrag installs, setup will ask if you'd like to install a trial of Boost. Speed, which is another program from Auslogics. It has nothing to do with defragmenting, is only a trial, and isn't required for Disk Defrag to work, so you can uncheck that option in the.
